Know thyself. — Temple of Apollo at Delphi
We try to practice what we preach. Here are some of our own assumptions that we acknowledge and knowingly rely upon.
- Although human beings have different talents and failings, all people have equal value.
- Over the long run, progress in human society has been real and is worth fighting for.
- Evil exists and demands defeat or transformation, but with methods that respect human rights and dignity.
- We are capable of basing our actions on knowledge and reason rather than emotion, and we should aspire to do so in matters of public policy.
- Moral systems based upon faith in a supreme being are not inherently better than those that are not, and we are committed to the First Amendment’s separation of church and state.
- Appearances influence people and therefore matter, but substance matters more.
- There is no such thing as too much information, but we must often make decisions based on incomplete information. Recognizing our own gaps in knowledge helps improve our decision-making.
- The ability to understand other people’s perspectives is good not only for peaceful coexistence but also to improve our own well-being and wisdom.
- The value of the humanities and education cannot be properly measured by the economic wealth they may or may not create.
